BALTIMORE – It looks like Mother Nature may cooperate to allow Coppin State and Georgetown to play each other in a mid-week non-conference baseball contest. After both scheduled contests last year were cancelled because of rain, the Eagles and Hoyas hope to get together Tuesday afternoon at Bachman Park in Glen Burnie starting at 3:00 p.m.
Of course, the forecast is calling for rain showers throughout the day. So we shall see.
If the weather holds up, Coppin State (2-22 overall) and Georgetown (13-14) will play each other for the first time since May 1, 2013, a 6-5 Georgetown victory.
This will be the first of two consecutive mid-week games for Coppin State, which will visit La Salle University Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. The Eagles will play five games in each of the next three weeks, including this one. Freshman
Jesse Kraft is scheduled to get the ball for Coppin State as the starter.
For the Eagles this is the fourth home in a stretch in which they are playing seven out of eight at home.
Coppin State dropped two out of three games to first-place Maryland Eastern Shore last weekend. The 6-1 victory was highlighted by the strong pitching of
Anderson Burgess, who struck out seven batters en route to tossing his first complete game of the season. Offensively,
Colin Dower,
George Dragon and
Bryant Miranda had two hits each in the win. Dower drove in two runs.
Dragon leads the Eagles in batting average (.456), runs scored (14), doubles (four), slugging percentage (.467) and on-base percentage (.427). He's also tied for the team lead with two home runs and 14 RBIs. Dragon's batting average is sixth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
Randal Mendez (22 hits) and Jack Kraft (21 hits) are the only other Coppin State players with at least 20 hits on the season.
Jeffrey Fitch, who scored twice against the Hawks in the victory, is second on the team in batting with a .261 average.
Meanwhile, Georgetown dropped a pair of tight BIG EAST Conference games on Saturday to Creighton, falling 4-2 in seven innings in game one before having a comeback come just short in a 4-3 loss in game two. The Hoyas top hitter is Nick Collins, who is hitting at a .378 clip with 42 hits, eight doubles and four home runs.
Eric Webber (.294) and Jake Kuzbel (.282) are hitting near .300 for Georgetown. The top run producers for the Hoyas this season have been Chase Bushor (24 RBIs) and A.C. Carter (20 RBIs). Georgetown's expected starting pitcher is right hander Jimmy Swad (3-0, 4.19 earned run average).
