HANOVER, Md. – Pedro Agosto homered twice and drove in three runs as the Coppin State baseball team dropped its season finale to Delaware State, 11-6, on Saturday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles finished the year at 11-37 overall and 11-22 in the NEC while the Hornets moved to 8-41 on the year and 8-25 in league play.
Prior to the game, Coppin recognized its seniors in a pregame ceremony:
Elijah Charlot, Marcus Sanders, Pranav Sundar, Luke Corcoran, Keith Wallace, Bryce Thompson and
Justin Ritz.
Agosto was one of two Eagles with multi-hit efforts, joining
Jordan Treadwell who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a triple.
Armando (AJ) Hurtado also connected for a triple and
Angel Garcia added a double, a walk and drove in a run.
Justin Ritz made his second start on the mound of the series, breaking the CSU all-time record with his 68
th career pitching appearance, surpassing
Brian Pisani ('97). He allowed an infield single on a swinging bunt on the very first pitch before being relieved by
Nicco Holland.
Holland pitched 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out three before
Luke Corcoran went the next 3.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits.
Mekenna Wakakuwa threw the final two innings, allowing just one run on two hits.
Delaware State put two runs across in the first inning with a home run before the Eagles took the lead after their half of the frame. Treadwell got it started with a one-out single before scoring on a Hurtado double to left center. Agosto followed right up with his first home run of the game, taking a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left center.
The Hornets retook the lead with a two-run second and added another run in the third before Agosto led off the fourth with a home run, cutting DSU's lead to 5-4. Delaware State put a five-spot on the board in the fifth to go up, 10-4 which Treadwell cut into with a RBI triple to left center, driving in
Bryce Thompson from second after a leadoff walk and wild pitch.
Coppin threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs but came up empty with a 1-2-3 double play cutting the inning short. The Eagles were able to put a run across in the seventh on an RBI triple by Hurtado to dead centerfield, bringing in Treadwell from first after a leadoff walk.
DSU led off the ninth to up its lead to five runs before Mekenna retired the side. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Treadwell singled to left, and the ball got by the left fielder to advance him to third. Hurtado was then hit by a pitch before the final out was retired.
