Men's Basketball Closes Regular Season on Thursday Against Pirates

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Eagles (8-22, 7-8) close out the regular season at home on Thursday, March 2nd against Hampton (13-15, 10-5) at 7:30 p.m. Coppin State will honor six seniors on Senior Day; Joseph Gripper, Terry Harris Jr., Mufaro Murinda, Keith Shivers and Joshua Treadwell.
               
FIRST MEETING OF THE SEASON: The Eagles had a trio score in double figures with freshmen Dejuan Clayton leading the way with 20 points in a 77-65 road MEAC loss to Hampton. Clayton finished with season-highs in rebounds (5), steals (3) and three-point attempts. He was 6-for-14 from the field, 3-for-9 from three-point range and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line recording his second 20+ game of the season. Senior Terry Harris Jr. scored in double-figures for the second consecutive game with 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Senior Chas Brown added 12 points and made 4-of-6 free-throws. Brown is on a current five game streak scoring in double-digits. He also had two assists, a steal and a block with three rebounds. Senior Joshua Treadwell led the Eagles in rebounding with seven and senior Keith Shivers contributed six rebounds and six points.
               
ABOUT THE EAGLES
  • Coppin State is tied for seventh place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference standings with one game remaining on their schedule. The Eagles host the Pirated of Hampton, the fourth ranked team in the conference.
  • The Eagles went 3-4 in the month of February including a 2-1 record at home in the Physical Education Complex. CSU has an even record of 5-5 at home this season with a 4-3 conference record.
BEARS HOLD OFF EAGLES
The Eagles came up short on the road to rival Morgan State University, 71-66 on Monday, February 27. Coppin State trailed by as many as 19 points in the second half before cutting the deficit to two with under a minute left in regulation. Freshman Dejaun Clayton led the Eagles in scoring with 20 points on 5-of-9 made field goals, 3-of-4 three-pointers and a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. Junior Chas Brown was the other Eagle in double figure scoring finishing with 18 points on 8-of-13 made shots from the field. Brown was a force in the paint with several slam dunks on the Bear defenders while leading CSU in rebounds with seven. Senior Joshua Treadwell led the Eagles bench scoring with eight points and senior Keith Shivers tied a career-best with four steals and six points. Senior Joseph Gripper finished with a season-best three steals.
 
MADE THREE-POINTERS STREAK CONTINUES FOR EAGLES
Coppin State has made at least one three-point field goal in 215 consecutive games over the past seven seasons; which is the current longest streak in the nation. The last time the Eagles were unable to register a made three-pointer in a game was back on Feb. 22, 2010 at Delaware State (0-8).

•             Dejuan Clayton ranks 20th in MEAC scoring (11.5), 7th in assist/turnover ratio (1.7), 10th in free-throw percentage (.771), 10th in minutes played (32.0) and 12th in assists (3.1)
•             Terry Harris Jr. is 7th in free-throw percentage (.798), 14th in defensive rebounds (3.8) and 18th in rebounding (5.3)
•             Keith Shivers is 6th in steals (1.2)
•             Tre' Thomas is 15th in three-point field goal percentage (.365) and 13th in three-point field goal made (2.1)
•             Lucian Brownlee ranks 6th in three-point field goal percentage (.406)
•             Blake Simpson is 8th in offensive rebounds (1.8)
 
EAGLE MILESTONES
  • Senior Keith Shivers needs 22 points to reach 500 career points in two seasons as an Eagle. He currently has 478 total points. Recently, he surpassed the 200+ rebound mark at Savannah State and now has 203 total
  • Senior Joshua Treadwell has 583 career points and needs 17 to reach 600 total points
  • Junior Chas Brown needs ten points to eclipse the 200 point mark this season in just over 15 games played.
  • Freshman Dejuan Clayton has needs 11 assists to pass 100 in his rookie season.
