BALTIMORE – The Coppin State softball team is leaving the snow behind to participate in the Adidas Tournament hosted by Winthrop.
The Eagles (0-9) will begin play on Friday against Wagner at 1 p.m. Coppin State will meet Hartford Saturday at 3 p.m. and conclude the three-day tournament against Austin Peay Sunday at 10 a.m.
"Our softball IQ needs to be high this weekend," head coach
Ty Robinson said. "We have the talent to get the job done. Playing smart softball with a better effort is what we are looking for this weekend."
This will be the third straight tournament from Coppin State since the start of the season and the second time meeting Winthrop.
Through nine games, senior shortstop
Candice Van Horn leads the Eagles with a .235 batting average. She has five runs, four hits, four RBIs and a home run. Van Horn's totals include her grand slam against Winthrop during the previous meeting.
Juniors
Lauren Rogers and
Alanna Williams have .214 and .200 batting averages, respectively. Rogers has totaled three hits and a run while Williams has added four hits and two runs to the mix.
Coppin State has alternated between junior Oashaja Dobie and senior
Samantha Denlinger in the pitchers circle. Dobie has pitched 31.2 innings for 11 strikeouts. Denlinger has 9.2 innings on the mound.
After this weekend, the Eagles hit the road for the Delaware Spring Invitational hosted by Delaware. It will be the final non-conference tournament of the season for Coppin State.
