NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's softball team rallied from a 3-0 seventh inning deficit to defeat Morgan State, 4-3, at the MEAC Tournament on Friday afternoon at TowneBank Field. The sixth-seeded Eagles (9-26) will take on #2 Delaware State at 8:00 pm on Friday night with a trip to the Semifinals on the line while the Bears' season ends at 15-28.
On the brink of elimination, Coppin put a four-spot on the board in the top seventh to take the lead.
Giselle Ulloa and
Yasmin Burrell reached to start the inning, and after a fielder's choice put runners on the corners,
Leslie Sereno walked to load the bases.
Natasha Arroyo and
Xzylia Maravilla also drew back-to-back walks to cut the deficit to 3-2.
After a pitching change,
Brooklyn Lee-Scott singled up the middle to tie the score at three and
Camaren Corbett reached on a fielder's choice as an error by the catcher allowed the go-ahead run to touch home. Morgan State retired the next two batters to keep it a one-run game, but
Debra Hyde shut the door on the Bears.
Morgan got on the board with runs in the third inning and tacked on one in both the fourth and fifth innings as well.
Coppin managed just two hits in the game, coming from Corbett to lead off the game, and Lee-Scott in the seventh. Corbett also drew a walk as Hyde picked up her third win of the season, allowing just one earned run on seven hits in the complete game.
