BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team clinched a spot in the MEAC Tournament despite a pair of losses at Morgan State on Saturday afternoon at Lois Murray Field. The Eagles finished the regular season at 8-25 overall and 7-14 in the MEAC while the Bears moved to 12-26 on the year and 9-12 in league play.
CSU earned the sixth seed in the MEAC Tournament, scheduled for May 6-9 in Norfolk, Va. The Eagles will play in the first game of the Tournament on Wednesday in the double elimination tournament.
Game 1: Morgan State def. Coppin State, 11-5
Four Eagles, including top hitters
Giselle Ulloa and
Brooklyn Tapusoa had multi-hit games as the duo was joined by
Julianna Mejia and
Kylee Sandino. Tapusoa slugged a home run and drove in two runs along with Sandino.
Tatjana Harris and
Debra Hyde both threw 3.0 innings from the circle with Harris giving up six earned runs followed by Hyde with a pair.
Tapusoa put the Eagles on top 2-0 with a two-run bomb in the first inning, but Morgan quickly tied it up in its half of the inning and scored seven more runs over the next three innings to take a 9-2 lead.
Mejia and Sandino drove in runs for the Eagles in the fifth which was matched by the Bears and a Sandino home run in the seventh was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Game 2: Morgan State def. Coppin State, 15-7
Brooklyn Tapusoa finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs while
Kylee Sandino and
Camaren Corbett also had multi-hit games.
Julianna Mejia also homered and drove in a pair of runs.
Debra Hyde threw the first 1.1 innings and allowed eight runs in the loss before
Brooklyn Lee-Scott gave up five earned runs over the final 2.2 innings.
Coppin struck for four runs in the top of the first as Tapusoa drove in Corbett and
Emily Quintero. Mejia followed right up with a two-run shot over the fence in left field.
Morgan came right back for six runs in the bottom half of the inning and extended its lead to 13-4 after the third inning. Corbett doubled home Sandino in the fourth, but the Bears got the run back in their half and added another before CSU managed a pair of runs in the fifth on a throwing error.
