NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's softball team season came to and in 3-2 extra-inning loss to #2 Delaware State in the MEAC Tournament on Friday night at TowneBank Field. The Eagles finish the year at 9-27 overall while the Hornets improved to 28-17.
After five scoreless innings to start the game, Delaware State got on the board with a solo home run with two outs in the sixth.
Giselle Ulloa, Coppin's leading hitter for the season, answered right back with a home run to start the seventh.
Emily Quintero, who threw a complete game for the Eagles escaped the bottom of the seventh, stranding three runners on base before forcing a weak popup to second base.
Both teams failed to score in the eighth despite the international tiebreaker rule where a runner is placed on second base to start the inning. Coppin took its first lead of the game in the ninth after a fielding error allowed
Camaren Corbett to score from third after she was placed on second and got to third on a wild pitch.
Facing a deficit for the first time of the game, DSU also had a wild pitch get their placed runner to third and a single off the pitcher scored her to tie the score at two. A throwing error and a fielder's choice loaded the bases before a wild pitch to the backstop accounted for the winning run.
Ulloa had two of Coppin's four base hits and both knocks went for extra bases. Quintero threw 8.0 innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits while striking out three.
