NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's softball team dropped its first game of the MEAC Tournament to #3 South Carolina State, 8-0, in six innings on Wednesday afternoon at TowneBank Field. The Eagles (8-26) will play in an elimination game at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 7 while the Bulldogs advance to the winners bracket and play at 8 pm tonight.
Kylee Sandino had two of Coppin's three base hits while
Camaren Corbett had the other.
Emily Quintero and
Julianna Mejia also drew walks. In the circle,
Tatjana Harris gave up five runs on seven hits while striking out five in 4.1 innings.
Debra Hyde went the final inning and gave up the game-clinching run with one out in the sixth.
South Carolina State scored seven runs over the first four innings as the Eagles managed just two baserunners during that stretch. Both teams went scoreless in the fifth despite Coppin loading the bases and the Eagles put two more on base in the sixth but failed to capitalize.
Hyde struck out SC State's
Dallas Hill to start the sixth, but
Makayla Chisholm clinched the win with a shot over the left field fence.
Dymond Roundtree went the distance on the rubber for the Bulldogs, giving up just three hits and two walks in the shutout.
