Derek Carter has announced that
Michael Vann has been named the Eagles' men's & women's head tennis coach. Vann comes to Coppin after serving in the same role at Gettysburg College the last four seasons.
During his tenure at Gettysburg, Vann transformed the Bullets' men's and women's programs into contenders in the highly competitive Centennial Conference, one of the top leagues in Division III. Vann helped produce 23 All-Conference selections, along with several ITA Regionally ranked players, while the team reached several milestones, including its first-ever CC Tournament appearance in 2024. The following season, the Bullets earned their first-ever ITA National ranking.
Before arriving at Gettysburg, Vann spent nine seasons as an assistant coach at Johns Hopkins University, helping build one of Division III's premier tennis programs. During his tenure, the Blue Jays' men's team posted an impressive 69-1 record in Centennial Conference matches while capturing eight conference championships and earning an NCAA Tournament berth every season. Johns Hopkins advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals four times, including a national semifinal appearance in 2021. Following that season, Vann was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic South Region Assistant Coach of the Year after helping mentor more than 25 All-Americans and All-Centennial Conference selections, including four Centennial Conference Players of the Year.
Prior to Johns Hopkins, Vann served as head coach at Goucher College for seven seasons from 2005-12. During his tenure, he guided the men's program to a Capital Athletic Conference semifinal appearance and coached 10 ITA Scholar-Athletes while earning the 2011 USTA/ITA Community Outreach Award for the Mid-Atlantic Section. Earlier in his coaching career, he served as an assistant coach at Kenyon College and also coached at Bucknell University, Birmingham-Southern College, and his alma mater, the University of Alabama.
In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Vann has built an outstanding reputation in player development throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. From 2021-23, he has served as Director of Racquet Sports at Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix, Maryland. He has also held leadership and coaching positions at The Elkridge Club, Junior Tennis Champions Center, Green Spring Racquet Club and The Suburban Club. During his time at Junior Tennis Champions Center, one of the nation's premier USTA Regional Training Centers, he helped develop nationally and regionally ranked junior players while advising numerous student-athletes through the college recruiting process.
Vann holds some of the highest coaching certifications in the sport, including designation as a United States Tennis Association High Performance Coach, United States Professional Tennis Association Elite Professional and Professional Tennis Registry Performance Professional.
A graduate of the University of Alabama, Vann earned a Bachelor of Science in Education with a concentration in Human Performance. Vann also played two seasons at Jefferson State Community College where he was a nationally ranked singles and doubles player, team captain and All-America selection.
