NORFOLK, Va. – Solomon Hammond, Etiam Torgbenu and the 4x100m Relay all picked up wins as the Coppin State men's track & field team finished tied for second place at the 2025 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Norfolk State at William 'Dick' Price Stadium. The Eagles accumulated 111.5 points over the three days to tie with Howard for runner-up to the host Spartans.
Hammond ran the second leg of the gold medal winning 4x100m Relay (39.84) to start the final day of the championship alongside
Carl Drakes, Chris Adekoya and
Cole Schlotterbeck. A senior from Kumasi, Ghana, Hammond won the 100m dash later in the day in a wind-legal 10.14 which should send him to the NCAA East Preliminaries.
Drakes took second to Hammond in the 100m in 10.36, but his preliminary time of 10.25 on Thursday currently puts him on track for Regional competition. Hammond and Drakes also finished second and third in the 200m dash in times of 20.80 and 20.81, respectively.
Torgbenu won his first individual MEAC Title by running a season-best time of 1:53.07 in the 800m.
Jayeed Norbal and
Asa Francis also scored in the event, taking fourth and fifth, respectively, in 1:54.15 and 1:54.18. Torgbenu and Norbal also ran the final two legs of the 4x400m Relay that finished third in 3:10.08 along with
Jarrett Gentles and
Daniel Cunningham.
Gentles and Cunningham also picked up key points for the Eagles in their open events, with Gentles taking third in the 400m hurdles (51.53) while Cunningham took fourth in the 400m dash (48.24).
Alexander Dobson-Honablue took fourth in the javelin, as his first toss of the event traveled 49.01m (160' 9").
Humed Nura doubled up in the 1,500m and 5,000m, and he took seventh in the 5K in a season-best 16:33.58, while taking 12
th in the 1,500m (4:15.81).
Also competing on the final day was
Fiyin Amori, who took 13
th in the triple jump with a leap of 13.75m (45' 1.5").
