BALTIMORE – Coppin State's Men's Tennis program is proud to announce the signing of Flavius Henderson II, a decorated national champion from Augusta, Georgia. Henderson, a USTA Foundation Excellence Team member who has been training at Mach Academy, will join the Eagles for the upcoming 2025-26 season.

Henderson, a Cyber Security Engineering major, comes to Coppin State with an impressive competitive record that includes multiple titles at the 2021 American Tennis Association (ATA) National Championships, and ambitious goals both on and off the court. As a standout at Mach Academy—the same training ground that produced Eagles' Head Coach Ebonye Jones—Henderson brings a championship pedigree and dedication that perfectly aligns with the program's vision.

"Signing Flavius is particularly special for me," said Coach Ebonye Jones. "Having walked the same paths at Mach Academy, I've been able to watch his development into a national-caliber player. His dominance at the 2021 ATA National Championships, where he captured both the Boys 16s Singles title and Doubles championship, demonstrated the exceptional talent we're bringing to our program. His USTA Excellence Team experience brings a high-performance mindset to our team, and his tournament success demonstrates the competitive fire we value. His commitment to excellence and his technical skills make him an excellent addition to our roster. As a fellow Mach Academy graduate, I'm thrilled to welcome him to Baltimore and our Eagle family."

Henderson's tennis journey began through the guidance of his uncle, who introduced him to the sport at a young age. That early exposure developed into a passion that has led to impressive accomplishments, including his breakout performance at the 2021 ATA National Championships, where he defeated four seeded players en route to claiming the Boys 16s Singles Championship. He further showcased his versatility by partnering with Marcus Johnson to secure the Boys 16s Doubles Championship with an 8-6 triumph in the championship match. His performance at the ATA Nationals earned him the tournament's Outstanding Junior Male Athlete Award, recognizing his exceptional performance across multiple events.

His extensive training at Mach Academy has prepared him for the challenges of college tennis, and he joins a program where tennis runs in the family—Henderson comes from a tennis-oriented family that includes two sisters and two cousins who also play the sport. His selection to the USTA Foundation Excellence Team highlights his status as one of the nation's top junior players and demonstrates his potential to make an immediate impact at the collegiate level.

In addition to his ATA National Championship success, Henderson's notable achievements include winning USTA Orange Bowl Championships in both singles and doubles divisions, advancing to become an Advanced State Champion, and receiving a prestigious USTA Sportsmanship award. Among his goals, Henderson has expressed determination to strengthen his body for high-level men's tennis, win his first college match as a freshman, and ultimately make his way to the top of the roster. Long-term, he aspires to win an MEAC championship and make his mark at the NCAA Division I level.

"I want to help foster a team culture that values hard work, unity, and perseverance," Henderson stated in his commitment letter. "The lessons I learned winning at the ATA National Championships—maintaining composure under pressure and elevating my game in critical moments—are experiences I'm excited to bring to Coppin State. On the court, I will strive to compete at the highest level I can, help lead the team to success in our conference and always represent Coppin State with integrity and excellence."

Beyond athletics, Henderson is committed to academic excellence, aiming to make the Dean's List throughout his collegiate career while pursuing internships related to his Cyber Security Engineering major.

Henderson joins a Coppin State tennis program that continues to build momentum in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). His addition reinforces Coach Jones' commitment to recruiting talented players who can help elevate the Eagles.
