PETERSBURG, Va. - On what proved to be the warmest day of competition yet this spring, Coppin State University's men's and women's tennis teams turned up the heat on the courts, delivering dominant performances against Virginia State University.
The men's squad made a powerful statement, sweeping the Trojans, 4-0. Strong showings in singles and doubles defined the afternoon, as the Eagles captured two of the three doubles matches, with the pairing of
Rishi Jalota and
Liam Murtaugh clinching their set 6-1. In singles play, Coppin State came out swinging, with
Harsh Kheterpal and Jalota each securing emphatic straight-set victories, both winning without dropping a game.
Meanwhile, on the women's side, Coppin State battled tough and emerged victorious with a 4-0 win over Virginia State. The Eagles dropped both doubles contests but roared back in singles play.
Brandy Babcock-Hannah and
Megan Etienne each fought through tight sets, ultimately overpowering their opponents.
Kyla Proctor added to the tally with a straight-set win, and a default win at the sixth singles spot helped seal the team win.
Assistant coach
Malcolm Berry praised the team's mental toughness and ability to adapt to the conditions:
"This was the warmest day we've had all season, and our players responded with focus and energy," Berry said. "Both teams showed resilience and competed with heart. We've been working hard, and it's showing in our results."
With the wins, Coppin State continues to build momentum as the season heats up—both literally and competitively.
