CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Coppin State men's tennis team brought high energy to its season opener but fell short in a hard-fought 5-2 decision against Stonehill College at Washington College on Sunday. The Eagles displayed strong performances across the lineup, including a standout effort from
Rishi Jalota at #6 singles.
In doubles play, Coppin State was unable to secure the opening point, with Stonehill clinching. The pair of
Liam Murtaugh and
Harsh Kheterpal topped the duo Kroll/Krefting 7-5. The Eagles rebounded in singles, notching two victories behind commanding performances from
Rishi Jalota and
Dentry Mortimer.
The match of the day came at #6 singles, where
Rishi Jalota battled through a grueling three-set thriller. After losing first set in a tiebreaker, Jalota fought hard in the second and deciding sets, winning the match 6-7(8), 7-6(4), 10-9 in a heart-pounding super tiebreak finish.
Despite the loss, Coppin State showed promise with strong individual performances and will look to build on this experience as the season progresses. The Eagles will return to action next weekend as they continue their non-conference schedule against the College of Charleston.
