NEW YORK, N.Y. – Solomon Hammond won the 200m dash and took second in the 60m dash while
Halutie Hor scored in both short sprints to lead the Coppin State track & field teams at the KPMG HBCU Showcase at the Armory Track & Field Center on Saturday. The men's team finished third of 16 schools while the women placed 11
th overall.
Hammond clocked a blistering 21.25 in the 200m dash while finishing the 60m in 6.76, just ahead of
Carl Drakes who took third in 6.80.
Cole Schlotterbeck doubled in the sprints as well, taking sixth in the 200m (21.85) while running a 6.93 in the 60m.
In the 400m dash,
Abdul Razak led a trio of Eagles with a fourth place finish in 48.19.
Jarrett Gentles covered the two laps in 49.43, just before running a 22.18 in the 200m.
Asa Francis, the defending MEAC Champion in the 800m, took third in the event in 1:53.55.
Jayeed Norbal also scored in the event, finishing seventh in 1:55.49, just ahead of
Etiam Torgbenu in 1:55.93.
Also scoring in their open events was
Andrew Betton in the pole vault after clearing 3.65m (11' 11.75") to take seventh, and
Humed Nura in the Mile (4:35.63) which was good for eighth.
To close the meet, the 4x400m relay of
Daniel Cunningham, Drakes, Razak and Gentles took second in 3:16.11. Cunningham had run the open 400 in 49.85 earlier in the day.
On the women's side, Hor took fourth in the 200m (24.60) and sixth in the 60m (7.60) with
Gifty Oku and
Kyah Lafortune just behind in both events. Oku took seventh in the 60m (7.62) along with a 25.54 in the 200m while Lafortune placed eighth in the 200m (24.97) to go with a 7.93 in the 60m.
Raniya Perry also threw the shot put 9.86m (32' 4.25").
The Eagles return to the track on January 31-February 1 at the Penn State National Open.
