Etienne and Johnson Advance to Bedford Cup Finals

College Park, MD:  Women's tennis made their fall season debut at the Bedford Cup, resulting a doubles victory from Megan Etienne and Emperess Johnson in the west quarter finals on Friday, September 22nd.  This marks the first Bedford Cup doubles victory in program history.

Etienne and Johnson doubled up against Langhus and Grewal from Loyola University for a 7-5 victory in the semi-finals.  In the Bedford Cup finals, the Eagle's duo won two games against Georgetown in a 6-2 loss against Thompson and Giraldo. 
 
On day one of singles play, Etienne beat Howard University by default.  Indy Ampaw matched up against George Mason's Emily Wirt.  After trailing Wirt 5-1 in the first two sets, Ampaw made a comeback to compile eight wins total.  Ampaw went on a four game win streak in set two to bring out a tie at 5-5.  Wirt pulled away with a 7-5 victory in the set.  After defeating Loyola in doubles play, Johnson matched up again against Langus in singles play and took a game in the first set.    

On day two of the Bedford Cup, Ampaw played an extended three set match with two tie breakers against Emi Shiykumar from Loyola University.  Ampaw won the tiebreak at 7-4 in the first set for a 7-6 victory.   Shiykumar took the second set 6-4 to carry out a ten point tie break in set three.  Ampaw won seven games in a 10-7 loss in the tiebreaker.   

Up Next: The Eagles will travel to Lynchburg Virginia for the ITA Regionals from October 19th for a four day tournament.
