Women’s Tennis Opens Fall Season With Several Wins Over Local Foes at Bedford Cup

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Coppin State's women's tennis team opened its Fall season at the Bedford Cup, hosted by University of Maryland over the weekend at Junior Tennis Champions Center.  All four Eagles entered into the competition picked up at least one singles win while the duo of Brandy Babcock-Hannah and Sapphire Ferguson had a successful doubles competition.
 
To open the weekend, Babcock-Hannah and Kyla Proctor defeated a pair of conference rivals from Delaware State in straight sets.  Babcock-Hannah defeated Hannah Watkins 6-0, 7-5 while Proctor was victorious over Kayla Wright, 7-5, 6-3. Babcock-Hannah won a set over the Hornets' Angelina Maniawska before falling, 10-8 in the third.
 
Ferguson and Sirena Singh also won singles matches against a pair of Loyola Greyhounds, with both defeating Sabrina Grewal. Ferguson won 7-6, 6-1 and Singh earned her first collegiate victory, 7-5, 6-2.
 
In doubles play, Babcock-Hannah and Ferguson opened with an impressive 6-2 win over George Mason's pairing of Maitree Rout and Noelle Talarek.  They later defeated Alba Benedito and Audrey Yvana Mengue from Delaware State, 7-5.
 
The Eagles will return to action at the George Mason Invitational on October 11-12 before hosting the Second Annual Fanny Jackson Coppin (FJC) Cup on October 17.
