Coppin Men Hoops to Participate in Cerebro Sports Lake Erie Challenge

BALTIMORE – Coppin State men's basketball team will participate in the Cerebro Sports Lake Erie Challenge, hosted by Cleveland State and Canisius November 22-24.

Opening Tip
This will be the second meeting between Cleveland State and the Eagles. CSU fell to the Vikings on November 17, 2017, 80-56.
Canisius and the Eagles will be meeting for the first time on Wednesday.
Quick Note
Jesse Zarzuela (11.9), Tyree Corbett (10.7), and Nendah Tarke (9.1) lead the Eagles in scoring. Tarke also leads the teams in steals (21). Mike Hood leads in blocks (3).
 
Last Time Out
Coppin State men's basketball fell to Virginia after a hard battle, on Friday night, with a final score of 68-52 at the John Paul Jones Arena.
Daniel Titus led all players with a season-high 17 points and went 4-fo- 6 from beyond the arch.  Sitah Conteh was the Eagles second leading scorer with 10 points and made all three of his three-point field goals.  Nendah Tarke added eight points and a team-high of four steals, while Kyle Cardaci made prominent defensive plays, tallying three steals. Tyree Corbett recorded a team-high of five rebounds along with five points. 

Preseason Poll
Redshirt freshman Nendah Tarke and sophomore Kyle Cardaci were named to the Preseason
All-MEAC Teams. Tarke received first Team accolades while Cardaci earned seconnd Team honors. The Eagles were picked to finish fourth in the Preeseason Poll.
 
Coppin Contributors
Tarke earned third Team All-MEAC honors and was the 2020-21 MEAC Rookie of the Year last season. Over the final six games, Tarke averaged 16.5 points along with 5.8 rebounds and 2.5 steals.
 
Cardaci was the top 3-point shooter in the MEAC a year ago, making 54 3-pointers while averaging 9.3 points. He made 40.3% from deep and increased that percentage to 44.9% in MEAC play.
 
Eagle Returners
Returning from last season are Nendah Tarke, the 2020-21 MEAC Rookie of the Year and a third Team All-Conference selection, as well as the league's top three-point shooter in Kyle CardaciIsaiah Gross is also back after appearing in 14 games last season following an injury plagued 2019-20 season. Reggie James missed all of last season with an injury but played in 25 games for CSU during the 2019-20 season. Justin Steers last played in a game during the 2018-19 season where he averaged 6.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and had 25 blocks.

New to the Nest
Nine new faces join the Coppin State program with four NCAA Division I transfers (Sita ContehTyree CorbettMike Hood & Nathaniel Stokes), four JUCO transfers (Remy LemovouAlex RojasDaniel Titus & Jesse Zarzuela) and true freshman Greg Spurlock.
 
Scouting Cleveland State
Cleveland State notched its second straight win with an 80-70 victory over Canisius to open the Cerebro Sports Lake Erie Challenge. The Vikings eclipsed the 80-point mark for the first time this season, led by three players in double-figures, including D'Moi Hodge with 27. The Vikings recorded 21 assists on 31 made field goals, while shooting 57-percent from the floor.
Cleveland State returns 14 letterwinners from last season's #HLMBB Championship squad, including the starting rotation of Craig Beaudion, Tre Gomillion, D'Moi Hodge, Deante Johnson, and Torrey Patton. This returning core will be joined by four transfers and one freshman for the upcoming season, giving head coach Dennis Gates a well-rounded roster for the 2021-22 campaign.

Scouting Canisius
Canisius fell to Cleveland State 80-70 on November 20 in the opening of the Cerebro Sports Lake Erie Challenge. They will host Fredonia tomorrow, November 22 for their home opener.
The 2021-22 edition of the Canisius men's basketball team features the return of four starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's squad that went 7-6 overall and 7-5 in MAAC play. Canisius returns 77.2 percent of its scoring offense from a season ago, as well as 81.2 percent of total minutes played.
Senior forward Malek Green was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team and led the 2020-21 team in both scoring average (13.2 points) and rebounding average (7.2 board) per game.

After the tournament, the Eagles will travel to Greenville, North Carolina to take on East Carolina Saturday, November 27 at 4 p.m. inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
