PREVIEW: Men's Basketball Hits the Road Monday at Hampton

Coppin State (5-17, 4-3) hits the road for the first of two meetings this season against the Hampton Pirates on Monday, January 30th at 7:00 p.m. The Eagles are currently on a two game skid after a pair of home losses this week to Norfolk State and most recently to rival Morgan State on Saturday. The Pirates lead the all-time series with the Eagles 32-24.

LAST TIME OUT
Terry Harris Jr. finished with 19 points, seven rebounds on 6-of-9 made shots from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, but the Eagles suffered a 76-74 loss at home to Morgan State on Saturday. Senior Keith Shivers scored 16 points hitting a pair of three-pointers and recorded a career-high with six assists. Freshman Dejuan Clayton scored 15 points also hitting a pair of three-pointers while knocking down 5-of-6 free-throws. Senior Chas Brown finished with 14 points, six rebounds and senior Joseph Gripper led the bench scoring with six points.

EAGLES VS. NORFOLK STATE RECAP
Tre' Thomas led three Eagles in double figure scoring with 14 points in a home loss to Norfolk State on Monday. The loss snapped a three-game win streak and marked the team's second MEAC defeat of the season. Coppin State had a strong opening half shooting 48-percent (12-25) from the field compared to Norfolk State's struggling 24-percent (6-25). In the second half Norfolk State improved their shooting to 67-percent (19-28) and 76-percent from the free-throw line. Coppin State trended in the opposite direction shooting 38-percent from the field (7-18) and a miserable 48-percent from the charity stripe (14-29).

CLAYTON NAMED MEAC CO-PLAYER & CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Dejuan Clayton was selected Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week and Co-Rookie of the Week for his play last week for the Eagles. Clayton scored a career-high 28 points in Coppin State's win at Howard on Monday, Jan. 16. In addition to his career-high output, the freshman from Bowie, Md. dished out five assists while also pulling down four rebounds. Clayton also had a stellar shooting performance as he shot 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the field.

BROWN DOMINATES PAINT IN MEAC COMPETITION
Chas Brown is averaging 11.7 points per game through seven games played this season. He has scored in double figures in three consecutive conference games while averaging 5.6 rebounds.

BACKCOURT SHOWS PROMISE
Tre' Thomas and Dejuan Clayton have started all six MEAC games played for Coppin State at the guard positions. Both rank in the top-6 MEAC three-point field goal percentages. Thomas led the Eagles in scoring with 14 points against Norfolk State. He scored 13 in their previous game at Howard and leads the team in made three-pointers in conference play (11). Clayton leads the team in scoring during MEAC play at 13.2 ppg. He also leads the team in assists (25) and minutes played (211). Clayton is also tied for second on the team in made three-point field goals during MEAC play at (10).

MADE THREE-POINTERS STREAK CONTINUES FOR EAGLES
Coppin State has made at least one three-point field goal in 208 consecutive games over the past seven seasons; which is the current longest streak in the nation. The last time the Eagles were unable to register a made three-pointer in a game was back on Feb. 22, 2010 at Delaware State (0-8).

  • Dejuan Clayton ranks 27th in scoring (10.1), 13th in steals (1.0), 14th in assists (2.9)
  • Josh Treadwell follows tied for 28th in scoring (10.1), 13th in three-point field goal percentage (.369)
  • Terry Harris Jr. is 17th in rebounding (5.3) and 15th in free-throw percentage (.714) and defensive rebounds (3.9)
  • Keith Shivers is 10th in steals (1.1)
  • Tre' Thomas is 12th in three-point field goals made (2.0), 14th in three-point field goal percentage
  • Blake Simpson is 10th in offensive rebounds (2.0)

Coppin State continues their two game road trip with a Saturday afternoon matchup in Princess Anne, MD against Maryland Eastern Shore on February 4th at 4 p.m. The Eagles lead the all-time series against the Hawks 59-19.
