COLLEGE PARK - The women's track and field team placed fourth overall with 83 points at the Maryland Invitational on Saturday, March 26
th. Several Lady Eagles qualified for the 2016 MEAC Track and Field Outdoor Championships in eight separate events.
Coppin State's field team led the pack with 13 individual top-10 finishes in six events. Sophomore thrower
Kristen Deacon placed second in the hammer throw (42.96m), fourth in the discus (39.95m), and fifth in the shot put event (12.28m) surpassing the MEAC outdoor qualifying mark. In the discus competition she set a new personal record in the event.
Throwers senior
Alethia Edwards and junior Elenna Torres also had great performances this weekend. Edwards was fourth in the javelin throw (34.08m) and hammer events (37.77m) while Torres placed fifth in the discus (27.27m) and seventh in the hammer (27.80m). Edwards hammer mark was a personal record and her javelin throw was the only CSU MEAC qualifying mark in that event. The trio all qualified in the hammer. Torres made it in the discus joining Deacon.
Senior jumper
Deandra Daniel and freshman multi
Khemani Roberts both placed amongst the top five in the women's high jump event. Daniel came second with a leap of 1.70 meters and Roberts was fifth at 1.66 meters, as the pair qualified for the MEAC Championships in the high jump. The duo had another top five finish in the long jump event with Daniel's (5.24m) coming fourth and Roberts (5.20m) following in fifth place.
Junior sprinter
Alexis Marsh finished fourth in the women's 400 meter event with a MEAC outdoor qualifying time of 57.24 seconds. Senior hurdler
Tanaya Yarde finished fourth in the women's 400 meter hurdles also with a MEAC qualifying time in 1:03.07. Sophomore
Randi Bohler ran a personal best time in the women's 100 meter hurdles at 14.78 seconds securing a spot in the MEAC Outdoor Championships. Sophomore
Breana Hagwood was seventh in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.20 seconds.
Rounding out the Lady Eagles weekend success was the 4x400 meter relay team of
Alexis Marsh,
Melissa Caddle-Hope,
Tanaya Yarde, and
Khemani Roberts. The Lady Eagles relay team came second overall in 3:49.23.
Coppin State's track and field teams will compete next at the Savannah State Twilight meet on Wednesday, March 30
th in Savannah, GA.
