NORFOLK, Va. – The Coppin State baseball team concluded its 2015 season by dropping a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader to Norfolk State by identical 6-1 scores at Marty L. Miller Field Sunday afternoon.
Coppin State finished its season with a 3-38-2 overall record and 2-22 mark in the MEAC. Norfolk State (23-13, 19-5) won the MEAC Northern Division regular season title.
In the opening game,
Colin Dower drew a leadoff walk, stole second base and scored from second base on
Randal Mendez's groundout to second base. Dower used some smart baseball to hustle home from second. He caught Norfolk State's defense napping following the standard 4-3 groundout. Norfolk State's first baseman turned his back on the field and fell asleep. Dower sprinted home and beat the throw home. It was a heads up play.
For Dower, it was his team-leading 22nd run of the season.
Anderson Burgess struck out four batters in a complete game setback.
In the nightcap, senior
William Brown paced the Coppin State offense with his 33rd career multi-hit effort. In his final game as an Eagle, Brown singled in the second and sixth innings.
Jeffrey Fitch and
Darien Percell also singled for the Eagles during the game. Dower's bases loaded walk scored Percell with Coppin State's lone run in the fourth inning.
Bobby Dragon, who had 43 hits, led the Eagles with a .295 batting average. Jack Kraft led Coppin State with three homers and 19 RBIs. In 24 conference contests, Dower produced a .288 batting average. Also in MEAC contests, Percell paced Coppin State with 10 bases on balls. Brown was the only Eagle to play in all 24 games against MEAC competition. He had 11 hits, scored 10 runs and walked 10 times.
