BALTIMORE – Coppin State will visit George Washington on Wednesday for a non-conference match slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The afternoon game will be a Blue Ribbon game to raise prostate cancer awareness alongside Ed Randall's Fans for the Cure.
The two teams haven't met since 2011, where the Eagles secured a close 5-4 victory.
Coppin State is coming off a three-game setback to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Delaware State earlier this week.
During the two-day series, junior
Danielle Smith topped the Eagles (3-21 overall, 3-6 MEAC) with six runs, five hits and four RBIs to extend her hitting streak to 11 games. In Monday's finale, Smith was perfect at the plate going 2-for-2 with three walks. She maintained a .857 batting average through the meetings with DSU.
Smith is batting .348 on the season, leading the team in hits (24) and runs scored (23).
Senior
Candice Van Horn has a team-high .383 batting average. Van Horn tops the Eagles with 16 RBIs and seven stolen bases. Her .683 slugging percentage and .507 on-base percentage are third in the MEAC.
George Washington is also taking a break from its conference play.
The Colonials (20-17) bested Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis in two of three game over the weekend by scores of 19-6 in the final two games of the series.
Junior Carlee Gray leads GW's offense with a .371 average and a team-high four triples while senior Victoria Valos (.365) has a team-best 36 RBIs. Valos sits just two hits away from reaching 200 in her career, a mark met previously by only one Colonial.
Coppin State will get to rest this weekend before heading to the University of Delaware Tuesday, April 21. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
