Eagles excited to be back in action

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team hits the road to Mount St. Mary's (Md.) for a doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 2:00 p.m.

The Eagles (0-12) have not seen live action since Feb. 28, when it competed in the Adidas Invitational hosted by Winthrop University. Due to inclement weather, six of Coppin State's last 10 games have been cancelled while the other four were postponed.

"I'm worried about our timing," head coach Ty Robinson said. "That's a big concern when it comes to pitching, hitting and defense. We haven't played in 25 days. It's just like starting the season all over again."

In that tournament, senior shortstop Candice Van Horn led the Eagles with four hits, one run and an RBI while hitting a team-best .444 batting average. Van Horn also homered during Coppin State's 9-3 loss to Wagner. She had a hit in every game of Winthrop's tournament.

Van Horn, who leads the team with a .308 batting average, has reached base in seven straight games for the Eagles.

"With all the cancellations, we took a few days off to relax and gather ourselves," Van Horn said. "We worked a lot in practice on teamwork and communication. Hopefully the time off was what we needed to clear our minds."

Through 12 games, Alana Williams has reached base in seven straight games while Oashaja Dobie has four runs batted in for Coppin State. Danielle Smith has five hits, four runs, four RBIs and two home runs.

Mount St. Mary's (3-16) split a doubleheader against Cornell in its home opener Sunday.  Morgan Alisauckas leads the Mount with a .298 batting average, 14 hits, 13 RBIs, six runs and four homeruns. Niki Gonzalez also has a .298 batting average and 14 hits along with seven RBIs.

"In order to move forward and have better results, we need to work hard in each aspect of the game, all game, every game," Van Horn said. "We also need to have a positive, upbeat attitude throughout."

The Eagles continue its nine-game road trip and open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play against Maryland Eastern Shore this weekend. Coppin State will play a doubleheader against the Hawks Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. and wrap up competition on Sunday at noon.
