Box Score BALTIMORE – Behind a combined 39 kills from
Cindy Okpegbue and
Bailee Jackson, the Coppin State volleyball completed a necessary and festive formality by dismissing Delaware State, 3-1, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match Friday night in the Auxiliary Gym.
There was plenty of reason to celebrate for the Lady Eagles who defeated Delaware State 25-15, 25-14, 24-26, 25-15.
The outstanding senior quartet of Okpegbue,
Chelsee Sauni,
Kendra Ireigbe and
Denali Sturgeon were feted with necklaces made of candy, large framed posters with their uniforms encased inside of them, stylish Samoan lays and much more after being honored for outstanding careers.
Playing the final home match of their careers, the Auxiliary Gym was rocking from the first serve to the last point of the match. Members of the "Turn Up Squad" were dressed in kangaroo costumes. There were large volleyballs hanging around the facility with each seniors name and number inside of them. Parents cheered loudly and even started a "Let's Go Eagles" chant late in the third game.
Okpegbue led the way with 21 kills, the 57th time in her career she has finished with double-digit kills in a match. She has 1,192 in her amazing career as she closes in on
Ariel Richard's school record 1,223 kills. Okpegbue also enjoyed a productive .382 hitting percentage. She leads the MEAC in kills per set and points per set.
Sauni, who leads the MEAC in assists per set, finished with 50 assists, the 42nd time she has recorded at least 50 assists. Sturgeon added nine kills for the Lady Eagles (9-12 overall, 6-4 MEAC).
Meanwhile, the Eagles got an awesome glimpse of the future as Jackson finished with a career best 18 kills on 29 swings for .629 hitting percentage. The best part was she didn't commit an error as Coppin State hit .357 for the match. Freshman
Samantha Polk had her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Glory Rosado led Coppin State with 13 digs.
Leading Delaware State (2-20, 0-7) was senior Jasmine Jackson with 14 kills and Marisol Arredondo had 27 assists.
Coppin State visits Maryland Eastern Shore Sunday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. match.
