LEXINGTON, Ky. - Not only was Coppin State's volleyball dominant on the court last season, but it also proved its prowess in the classroom as well by earning the 2026 AVCA Team Academic Award which was announced by the organization late last week. To be eligible for the recognition, the program needed to maintain at least a 3.30 Team GPA for the academic year.
Coppin was accompanied by Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore as the only MEAC programs to receive the distinction with the Eagles accumulating a 3.54 GPA for the academic year.
"It comes as no surprise to see our sport have more than 1,400 (college and high school) teams earn the AVCA Team Academic Award again this season," said AVCA CEO Jaime Gordon. "We are grateful for the dedication of the coaches and players who make both classroom and on-court success the lifeblood of their programs."
Under the leadership of head coach
Tim Walsh, Coppin won its second MEAC Title in the last three years to make its second-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament during the 2025 season. The Eagles finished 23-12 overall while earning its fourth regular season championship with a 13-1 mark in conference play.
The Eagles open the 2026 season at the Virginia Tech Invitational on August 28-29 where they'll face William & Mary on Friday before taking on the Hokies on Saturday. Coppin also has early-season invitationals at Navy, Akron and UConn before starting conference play at Howard (Sep. 24) and Norfolk State (Sep. 27) before its home opener against Loyola Maryland on September 29.
