Smith named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week

BALTIMORE – Coppin State junior guard Sterling Smith was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Defensive Player of the Week.
 
Smith finished with 47 points, 22 rebounds, nine assists, nine steals and two blocks against Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Evansville last week. He posted his third career double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds in a loss to Eastern Michigan, while scoring a season-high 22 points against Evansville.
 
He started the week with 11 points and a team best six rebounds against Michigan.
 
For the week, Smith averaged team-highs in points (15.7) and rebounds (7.3). He shot 47.5 percent (19-for-40) from the field during the week and 42.1 percent from 3-point distance (8-for-19).
 
Smith is in a great groove for the Coppin State men's basketball team. He has scored in double figures in six straight games while making at least two 3-pointers in each contest. Smith leads the Eagles with 24 3-pointers. His efforts from deep has helped Coppin State lead the MEAC and rank 10th nationally in 3-pointers made per game (9.6).
 
Coppin State returns to action Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Eastern Kentucky University at 1:00 p.m. Fans will be able to follow the game with live stats.
