Solomon Hammond wins 60m Dash at MEAC Championship

Sprinters Lead Men’s Track to 4th Place at MEAC Indoor Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH – Coppin State's men's track & field team finished fourth at the MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, held over Sunday and Monday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.  The Eagles totaled 91.5 total points, just ahead of Howard, Morgan State, Maryland Eastern Shore, and N.C. Central.
 
The strongest sprint squad in the MEAC, Coppin picked up an impressive 61 points in events ranging from the 60m dash to 800m Run.
 
Solomon Hammond won 60m dash in 6.72, followed by Chris Adekoya in second (6.77) and Carl Drakes in fourth (6.83). Hammond (21.00) and Drakes (21.16) also finished second and third, respectively, in the 200m dash.
 
Asa Francis picked up the silver in the 800m Run in 1:51.83, followed closely by Etiam Torgbenu in fifth in 1:53.44.  The duo ran the final two legs of the 4x400m Relay that took second overall in 3:12.36 with Hammond and Timothy Frederick running the first two legs.  Frederick also picked up the bronze in the 400m dash in 48.01.
 
Freshman Elijah Williams won three bronze medals in his first MEAC Championship, taking third in the 60m hurdles (7.99), high jump (2.05m/6'8.75") and long jump (7.08m/23'2.75").  Williams clocked the third-fastest 60m hurdles time in CSU history and ranks third in the high jump as well.
 
In the triple jump, Alexander Dobson Honablue earned All-MEAC honors with a third-place finish, leaping 14.55m (47' 9").  He now ranks third in CSU history in the event.
 
Humed Nura anchored the DMR to a fifth-place finish in 10:23.30, following Francis, Frederick, and Torgbenu.  Nura also earned a point for the Eagles in the 5,000m (15:37.76) after finishing 10th in the 3,000m (9:03.45).  Nura now ranks second in CSU history in the 5,000m behind Rashaad Jordan's record time of 15:08.4.
 
Also turning out notable performances on the men's squad were the following:
 
Cole Schlotterbeck – 60m (6.88) and 200m (21.55)
Timothy Frederick – 200m (21.45)
Elijah Hicks – 800m (2:02.88)
Sean Williams – High Jump: 1.90m (6' 2.75")
Keyon Jackson – Triple Jump: 13.70m (44' 11.5")
 
The women's team finished eighth overall with Gifty Oku earning the team's lone points with a sixth-place finish in the 60m dash (7.61). Oku also finished 10th in the 200m (24.70), just ahead of Kyah La Fortune (24.78) who also led the team in the 400m (56.93).
 
Ariell Thomas and Karima Davenport-White finished back-to-back in the 60m hurdles in times of 9.29 and 9.43. Zeana Bain cleared 1.45m (4' 9") in the high jump and leaped 5.12m (16' 9.75") in the long jump.  Blair Griffith tossed the weight throw 7.70m (25' 3.25").
