Shemika Jones
A longtime coach, entrepreneur and published author, Jones has run her own company for the last three years where she directed student-athletes in balancing athletics, academics and personal development while also assisting on the Under Armour circuit and heading the I Believe Basketball Academy.
Jones served as an associate head coach at Johnson C. Smith from 2016 to 2022, helping the Golden Bulls to a winning record in all five seasons, including a CIAA Tournament Title in 2017 and Division titles in both 2017 and 2022. During her tenure, JCSU won 88 games and was even better in conference action, winning close to 70 percent of CIAA games. Additionally, 14 Golden Bulls earned All-Conference and All-Tournament Team honors and 35 athletes recorded at least a 3.0 grade point average.
No stranger to the MEAC, Jones got into collegiate coaching at North Carolina Central in 2014 and spent a pair of seasons with the Maroon and Gray before returning to her alma mater. Among her duties at NCCU were scouting reports, helping with schemes and skills on both sides of the ball, team travel, video coordination and day-to-day operations.
Prior to working at Central, Jones spent a season as an assistant at Maret High School in Washington, D.C. and served as a camp counselor at the Caron Butler Basketball Camp in Chantilly, Virginia (2007-09), the Roger Mason Basketball Camp in Owings Mills, Maryland (2007-09), and the Queen Anne School Basketball Camp in Largo, Maryland (2005-10).
Jones was a 1,000 point-scorer at Johnson C. Smith from 2004-08, where she twice participated in the NCAA Division II Tournament and earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration with a minor in marketing.
A mother, her return to the MEAC at Coppin State marks a full-circle moment in her career—bringing her back to the region where her basketball journey began.
