Women’s Tennis’ Sky Carter Wins Singles Title at Bedford Cup

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Coppin State's Sky Carter opened her collegiate career in exciting fashion, winning the singles title at the Bedford Cup, hosted by University of Maryland at the JTCC on Sunday.
 
A freshman from Bethesda, Md., Carter won the Group 1 Flight after defeating Towson's Jocelynn Ginsberg, 7-5 in the opening set.  Ginsberg then retired via an injury as Carter captured the victory. In Carter's three victories, she won 77.5% of her games.
 
Carter and fellow freshman Brandy Babcock-Hannah also won the Green Doubles West Flight, defeating Loyola Maryland's Sophia Moore and Addison Kemerer, 6-2. A native of Menifee, Calif., Babcock-Hannah earned a win by default over Morgan State's Tyler Williams to capture the Flight 7 West Final.
 
Also winning by default were the duo of freshman Kyla Proctor and graduate student Megan Etienne over Ashira Murray and Tamzin Poutney of Towson. Etienne battled Kemerer in the Flight 9 West Final and took the second set 6-4 before falling 10-7 in a tiebreaker.

Day 2
Coppin State's Sky Carter picked up a singles win and paired with fellow freshman Brandy Babcock-Hannah for a doubles victory as the Eagles women's tennis team completed the second day of the Bedford Cup, hosted by the University of Maryland at the JTCC on Saturday.
 
Carter bested Mount St. Mary's Emma Kaden, 6-0, 6-4 in the second round of her flight and she'll take on Jocelynn Ginsberg of Towson in Round Three on Sunday. The freshman duo of Carter and Babcock-Hannah defeated Delaware State's pairing of Palmer/Bowen, 6-3 and will battle Moore/Kemerer of Loyola Maryland in the Final of their flight tomorrow.
 
Babcock-Hannah also picked up a singles win by default over Towson's Tamzin Poutney in her flight and she'll take on Tyler Williams of Morgan State in the West Final.
 
Freshman Kyla Proctor was also victorious in singles action, taking down Delaware State's Jaiden Palmer, 6-1, 6-4.  Alison Azarak received a Bye in the same singles flight.
 
Proctor also combined with graduate student Megan Etienne in doubles and dropped a 6-1 decision to Motam/Talarek of George Mason before taking on Towson's Murray/Poutney.
 
Etienne received a Bye in her singles flight and she'll play Loyola's Addison Kemerer in the West Final tomorrow.

Day 1
Coppin State's women's tennis team opened its 2024-25 season at the Bedford Cup, hosted by the University of Maryland at the JTCC Tennis Facility, on Friday. The Eagles picked up wins on both the singles and doubles draws on the opening day of the tournament which features several of the top programs in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
 
Freshman Sky Carter opened her collegiate career in dominant fashion, blanking Delaware State's Jayla Douglas, 6-0, 6-0 in her singles draw.  In doubles action, she, along with fellow freshman Brandy Babcock-Hannah took Towson's duo of Suchinsky/Carper to the wire before falling, 6-4. Babcock-Hannah put up a great effort in singles play before falling 6-2, 6-3 to Mount St. Mary's Margherita Trolese.
 
Kyla Proctor teamed with graduate student Megan Etienne and defeated the duo of Assael/Shivkumar of Loyola Maryland, 6-1.  This followed a tough loss to GW's Sasinka/Ramirez by the same score.  Proctor won five games in a loss to Morgan State's Roua Limem.
 
Etienne was matched up against Towson's Aubrey Carper and fell 6-1, 6-0, while Alison Azarak took a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Lakshya Motam of George Mason.

Up Next: The Eagles return to the court on September 19-22 for the HBCU Championships in Atlanta, Ga.
