Volleyball Falls at MEAC Rival Delaware State, 3-1

Box Score DOVER, Del. – Coppin State's volleyball team fell, 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-20, 25-11) at Delaware State on Friday night at the Hornets' Memorial Hall. The Eagles fell to 10-14 on the year and 6-2 in the MEAC while DSU improved to 10-11 on the year and 6-2 in league play.
 
Coppin was led by Sophia Bertotti Metoyer with ten kills on .421 swinging, followed by TaKenya Stafford with nine kills, Deviana Walker with six, Ezgi Kucuk with four and both Ahzhi Coleman and Ayanna Pharoah with three. 
 
Kahea Carvalho and Azul Pilahg combined for 32 assists while Coco Figueroa was credited with a team-high nine digs, followed by Stafford and Alessia Gallo with six apiece.
 
Stafford and Bertotti Metoyer were credited with three blocks apiece while Coleman, who saw her first action in over a year, had a pair of blocks.
 
The Hornets used an early 5-0 run to take a 7-2 lead in the first set, forcing an Eagles timeout. The stoppage paid off for Coppin as they responded with four-straight points but the Hornets went on to score two points for every CSU point on four-straight occasions to pull away. Coppin got a pair of kills on a last-ditch effort before DSU clinched the set.
 
After the opening point of the second set, Coppin scored three-straight points and never trailed the rest of the way. The Eagles opened up a 20-13 lead, their largest of the night, but DSU fought back to within 24-23 before Coppin scored to tie the match at one set apiece.
 
Both teams traded points to start the third set before a 4-0 Hornets run gave the hosts a 9-4 lead. Coppin got no closer than three points the rest of the match.
 
Delaware State got out of the gate strong in the fourth, scoring ten of the first 12 points with Bertotti Metoyer recording two kills during the run. The Hornets kept the momentum going to take the match.
 
The Eagles return to action on Sunday, October 27 when they host Maryland Eastern Shore in a 1 pm start on ESPN+.
