NEW YORK, N.Y. – A victory by
Kimani Alphonse in the 500m dash highlighted the Coppin State women's track & field team's day at the KPMG HBCU Showcase on Saturday at the Armory Track & Field Center.
Alphonse blew out the competition in the event in 1:15.52, beating out the next closest competitor by over two full seconds. Alphonse's time is the fifth-fastest in school history, and the fastest since March 4, 2000, when Tenia Terry clocked a 1:14.67.
Erin Palmer won her heat of the 200m in 25.95, leading a quintet of Eagles in the event, followed by
Benidicta Kwartemaa (26.04),
Nackera Allen (26.65),
Serena Harrison (26.69) and
Angel Davis (27.92).
Tracey Riley easily won her 400m heat by over four seconds in 59.48 and
Brianna Benton followed closely behind in 1:00.85.
Palmer also competed in the 60m hurdles (9.33), finishing just behind
Kaelyn Woodrum in 9.24. Woodrum also leaped 16' 10.75" in the long jump.
Harrison also clocked an 8.16 in the 60m dash and traveled 15' 6.75" in the long jump while
Raniya Perry tossed the shot put 30' 6.5."
Coppin returns to the track on January 19-20 for the Carolina Challenge, hosted by the University of South Carolina.
