NORFOLK, Va. – Highlighted by a podium sweep of the 400m dash, the Coppin State women's track & field team took fifth of eight teams with 88 points at the MEAC Outdoor Championships, hosted by Norfolk State at Dick Price Stadium this week.
Latifa Ali won the 400m dash in 52.99, followed by
Kimani Alphonse in second at 53.70 and
Shenelle Tomlinson in third at 54.49. Ali also took second in the 200m dash (23.55) and anchored the 4x100m Relay with
Gifty Oku,
Halutie Hor and Alphonse to silver in a school-record 44.92.
Hor recorded a pair of third-place finishes in the 100m dash (11.61) and 200m dash (23.95) while Oku took fifth in both events, clocking a 11.78 in the 100m dash and 24.30 in the 200m dash.
Alphonse and Tomlinson led off the 4x400m Relay, which placed second in a season-best 3:42.33, followed by
Destinee Mcleod and
Jahmei Wyatt. Wyatt earned another silver medal in the 800m Run in 2:12.19 while Mcleod recorded a personal record in the 400m hurdles, finishing seventh in 1:02.06.
Kaelyn Woodrum took fifth in the heptathlon over the first two days with 4,005 points.
Saidai Stuteley doubled up in the 1,500m (5:24.96) and 3,000m Steeplechase (13:12.08), taking seventh and fifth, respectively, in those events.
Brianna Benton narrowly missed out on advancing to the final of the 400m dash, taking ninth in 58.36, as did
Erin Palmer in the 110m hurdles (14.47).
Raniya Perry also tossed the shot put 9.79m (32' 1.50").
Select athletes will compete in the IC4A/ECAC Championships later this week in Fairfax, Va., on the campus of George Mason University.
