COLUMBIA, S.C. – Latifa Ali won the 400m dash and led the 4x100m Relay to a school-record as Coppin State's women's track & field team opened its outdoor season this weekend at the Weems Baskin Relays, hosted by University of South Carolina.
A junior from Kumasi, Ghana, Ali cruised to victory in the 400m dash with a tie of 53.19, besting teammate
Kimani Alphonse who took second in a personal-record 53.88, which is the fourth-fastest in school-history. The duo ran the last two legs of the 4x100m Relay, following
Gifty Oku and
Halutie Hor, that took third overall in 45.14, shattering a school-record by over six-tenths of a second.
Hor and Oku also placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 100m dash in times of 11.93 and 11.98.
Following Ali and Alphonse in the 400m,
Shenelle Tomlinson took fifth in the event in 55.85, followed by
Salomay Agyei (58.70) and
Brianna Benton (59.18).
Destinee McLoud led a trio of Eagles in the 400m hurdles, finishing eighth in 1:03.79, with
Kaelyn Woodrum clocking in at 1:05.30 and
Angel Davis (1:11.94). McLoud also ran the 200m dash in 25.20.
Jahmei Wyatt scored in the 800m Run, taking seventh in 2:18.70, and she also ran a leg of the 4x400m Relay that finished in in 3:57.11 with Benton, Hor and Agyei.
Elsewhere on the track,
Saidai Stuteley covered the 1,500m in 5:34.66 while
Erin Palmer crossed the finish of the 100m hurdles in 16.47. In field events,
Serena Harrison leaped 15' 11.5" in the long jump while
Raniya Perry tossed the shot put 30' 5.5" in her CSU debut.
Coppin returns to the track on April 1-2 for the Towson Invitational.
