NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Andrea Tsvetanova has been named the MEAC Volleyball Setter of the Week while
Laila Ibrahim earned Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This is the fourth time this season that Tsvetanova has received the conference's weekly setter award and the second for Ibrahim on the defensive side.
A redshirt senior from Sofia, Bulgaria, Tsvetanova averaged 11.83 assists while quarterbacking the offense to a .254 hitting percentage as the Eagles swept a pair of MEAC opponents over the weekend. Tsvetanova opened with 37 assists, two aces and three digs at Norfolk State with Coppin hitting .263 in the victory. Two days later, she recorded another 34 assists with the Eagles hitting .245 while sweeping Howard.
Tsvetanova leads the MEAC with 9.60 assists/set while ranking third with 0.48 aces/set as Coppin leads the conference with a .221 hitting percentage for the season. She ranks first in CSU history with 197 aces, which is second among active NCAA players, second with 2,671 assists and tenth with 642 digs.
Ibrahim tallied ten blocks in just six sets (1.67 per set) with the Eagles holding Norfolk State and Howard to a .161 hitting percentage. A sophomore from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Ibrahim recorded four blocks against the Spartans before coming back with six blocks against the Bison. Ibrahim added 13 kills in those matches while hitting .346.
The sophomore standout now leads the MEAC with a .351 hitting percentage while ranking second with 1.02 blocks per set.
Coppin stands alone atop the MEAC standings with a 16-3 overall record while going 6-0 in conference play. The Eagles return to action on Friday, October 13 when they travel across town to play Morgan State at 6 pm.
