Kamillah Monroque Named Most Outstanding Track Athlete at MEAC Indoor Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. Kamillah Monroque was named the MEAC Most Outstanding Track Athlete as she took gold in both the Mile and 800m Run on Wednesday while running a leg of the victorious Distance Medley Relay on Tuesday at the MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. 
 
Monroque with coachesThe Eagles recorded 86 total points to finish fourth in the team standings, just behind Morgan State for third (88), while Howard took the team title, followed by Norfolk State.
 
A sophomore from Castries, St. Lucia, Monroque was a double winner for Coppin in the final day of competition, winning the Mile in 5:07.99 which is the second-fastest time in CSU history before cruising to victory in the 800m Run in 2:14.74. Monroque was part of the Eagles' school-record breaking performance in the Distance Medley Relay on Tuesday in 12:12.22.
 
Latifa Ali broke her own school-record in the 200m dash, winning the gold out of the slower heat in 23.65.  A junior out of Kumasi, Ghana, Ali also took second in the 60m dash in 7.47 and led by the 4x400m Relay to a second-place finish in a school-record 3:39.73.  Joining Ali on the Relay to end the competition was Kimani Alphonse, Cathryn Lane and Shenelle Tomlinson.
 
Alphonse, Tomlinson and Lane had very busy days with Alphonse winning her heat of the 400m dash in 54.85 to take third overall and recording the third-fastest time school-history.  Tomlinson also finished fifth in the event in 55.16 and Lane placed sixth in 56.44. 
 
Freshman Jahmei Wyatt finished just behind Monroque in the 800m Run in 2:15.27 to take second place with Salomay Agyei also scoring in the event with a time of 2:22.01. Claudina Constantine also competed in the 800m Run, finishing in 2:23.15.
 
Also earning valuable points for the Eagles was Saidai Stuteley who took fifth in the 3,000m in 11:07.88, and Erin Palmer who clocked a season-best 8.90 to place sixth in the 60m hurdles.
 
The NCAA National Championships are set for March 11-12 and the Eagles could look to qualify in various events at selected Last Chance Meets over the next couple days.
