VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Coppin State's
Kaelyn Woodrum finished first in two events and second in another as she scored 2,997 total points to take the silver in the pentathlon at the Kenneth Giles NSU Invitational, held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on Friday.
A sophomore from Baltimore, Woodrum opened the event with a first-place finish in the 60m hurdles, clocking a season-best 9.08 for 893 events. Woodrum followed up with 523 points in the high jump, clearing 1.41m, taking second in the sub-event while remaining in first place after two events.
Freshman
Olivia Wright, who finished sixth overall in the pentathlon with 2,579 points, cleared 1.47m (588 points) in the high jump to defeat all competitors in the event after clocking a 9.88 in the 60m hurdles for 735 points.
The duo then moved to the shot put, where Wright took second place with a toss of 8.68m to record 443 points. Woodrum's apparatus traveled 7.07m for 340 points.
Woodrum and Wright both performed well in the long jump as Woodrum traveled 5.26m and Wright jumped 4.85m to obtain 631 and 519 points, respectively. Woodrum bested all performers in the 800m Run to close out the day, clocking a 2:36.81 for 610 points, but it was not enough to win it all as she was edged out by 37 total points.
Both Woodrum and Wright were competing in their first pentathlons of the season, and the first of Wright's collegiate career. Woodrum now ranks third in the MEAC in the event with Wright standing in sixth.
