Sam Sessoms, Justin Steers Receive MEAC Men’s Basketball Weekly Awards

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's Sam Sessoms and Justin Steers both earned the MEAC's weekly men's basketball awards, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon.  Sessoms picked up his seventh-straight Player of the Week honor while Steers was named the Defensive Player of the Week, his first-ever weekly award.
 
In a pair of games last week, including a double overtime win over James Madison, Sessoms averaged 22.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals while shooting 50.0% from the floor and a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line.  Sessoms put up a game-high 28 points with five assists and three steals against the Dukes, making 9-of-17 from the floor, 5-of-5 from the line and three 3-pointers.  He followed with a game-high 17 points on 7-of-7 free throws, six rebounds, three assists and three steals at George Mason.
 
Sessoms is averaging 23.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.9 steals this season while shooting 53.4% from the floor, 38.4% from 3-point range and 84.8% from the line.  A redshirt senior from Philadelphia, Pa., Sessoms leads the Nation in total points (353) and field goals (132) while ranking fourth in points per game, sixth in minutes (37:26), eighth in total assists (81), 30th in steals (28) and 31st in assists per game. 
 
Sessoms ranks sixth among active Division I players with 2,060 career points and third with 781 field goals while closing in on 500 career assists.
 
Steers averaged 4.0 blocks, 3.5 rebounds and a pair of steals last week, but also came up big on the offensive end with 15.5 points on 19-of-23 free throws.  A redshirt senior from Philadelphia, Pa., Steers scored a career-high 22 points on 12-of-14 free throws along with six rebounds, a career-high five blocks and three steals in a win over JMU.  Steers followed with nine points on 7-of-9 free throws and three blocks at George Mason.
 
This season, Steers is averaging 8.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game while shooting 51.5% from the floor. Steers leads the MEAC in free throws (66) and free throw attempts (87), ranking 13th and 16th nationally, respectively.  His 20 blocks also lead the MEAC while his 1.33 blocks per game are second in the conference.
 
Steers now has 71 career blocks to rank tenth in CSU history.
 
Coppin State (5-10) closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule at Richmond on Wednesday, December 28 in a 7 pm tipoff on ESPN+.  The Eagles will also play at Rutgers on Friday, December 30 in an 8 pm start on the B1G Network.
