NORFOLK, Va. – For the fifth time in as many weeks to open the season, Coppin State's
Sam Sessoms has been named the MEAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. Sessoms shares the award this week with Norfolk State's Joe Bryant.
Sessoms is the only player in the Nation to receive his conference's weekly award all five times this season, and only Chattanooga's Jake Stephens (four), Penn's Jordan Dingle (three) and Purdue's Zach Edey (three) have received at least three weekly honors.
A redshirt senior from Philadelphia, Pa., Sessoms averaged 23.0 points, 7.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals while shooting 17-of-35 (48.6%) in a pair of games for the Eagles last week. Sessoms nearly put up a double-double at North Carolina State with 24 points and nine assists before tallying 22 points, five assists and three steals over the weekend at East Carolina.
Sessoms is averaging a league-high 23.8 points and 5.9 assists while tallying 3.9 rebounds and 1.8 steals while shooting an impressive 52.7% from the floor and 39.1% from behind-the-arc. Sessoms ranks first nationally in total field goals (107), second in points (285), fourth in points per game (23.8), sixth in assists (71), 14
th in assists per game (5.9).
The seventh-leading active scorer in the Nation, Sessoms has 1,992 career points and 462 career assists. Sessoms has the third-most points of all active players with at least 1,500 points and 350 assists and his 462 assists rank 28
th among active players.
