BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team lost a pair of games to Howard University on Wednesday afternoon at CSU Softball Field to fall to 5-10 in MEAC play. The Bison won the opener, 14-0, before taking the nightcap, 11-1.
Brissa Alvarado,
Isabella Zalba and
Shawnee Ronyak all had hits for Coppin in game one, but unfortunately the Eagles were unable to put a run across against starting pitcher Kiana Carr.
Howard scored four runs in the first off starting pitcher
Kayleigh Reome and added four unearned runs in the second to take a commanding 8-0 lead. The Bison also scored two in the third and four in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
Maren Bernal, who came into the game with no outs in the second, retired the Bison in order in the fifth.
The Bison got out to a quick start in the nightcap with a leadoff home run off
Vanessa Carrizosa, who last two innings before being replaced by Alvarado. Howard scored twice in the second before Alvarado tossed a scoreless third.
Another run for Howard cross in the fourth to make it a 4-0 run game before the Bison put a seven spot on the board in the fifth.
CSU rallied in hopes to keep the game alive in the fifth as
Alexis Genovese drove in
Haley Bravo with an RBI single. Alvarado was then hit by a Tracy Mosley offering but a groundout ended the game with the bases loaded.
Bravo, Reome and Genovese had all of Coppin's three hits in game two.
Coppin wraps up its season on May 1-2 when it hosts Morgan State in back-to-back doubleheaders. Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 12 pm followed by a 1 pm Twinbill on Sunday. Sunday's doubleheader is also Senior Day and the Eagles will recognize four seniors prior to the start of game one:
