BALTIMORE – Kayleigh Reome tossed a four-hit shutout and
Isabella Zalba delivered with a walk-off single to give the Coppin State softball team a 1-0 victory in game two of a doubleheader against Morgan State on Saturday afternoon at CSU Softball Field. The opener was also a pitcher's duel, but the Bears got the better hand in a 2-1 win.
Zalba's game-winning hit came with no outs as Coppin loaded the bases on singles by
Ashley Weimann and
Sydney Dombrowski prior to
Vanessa Carrizosa drawing a walk. With the infield and outfield playing in, Zalba hit a shot over the left fielder to drive in Weimann for the victory.
Reome (3-2) held the Bears in check throughout the game as Morgan had just one runner reach thid base, coming just one out in the fourth. After walking the following batter, Weimann threw out a runner trying to steal second base, and Reome forced a flyout to center field to escape the inning.
Haley Bravo and Carrizosa both reached twice in the game, recording base hits while also drawing walks.
In the opener, Morgan State took an early 1-0 lead in the second as Coppin committed three errors in the inning. Carrizosa did a great job limiting the damage from the circle as she struck out a batter and fielded her position well for a groundout to end the inning.
Coppin loaded the bases in the third and fourth innings to no avail and the Bears capitalized with another run in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles got on the board in the seventh with an RBI double by
Nia Bowe to drive in
Shawnee Ronyak, but MSU retired the side to pick up the win.
Carrizosa was credited with just one earned run on six hits in the complete game loss, striking out four.
The Eagles close out the season when they host Morgan State in a 12 pm doubleheader on Sunday, May 2. Prior to the Twinbill, Coppin will recognize its seniors,
Nia Bowe,
Haley Bravo,
Sydney Dombrowski and
Soraya Valdez-Frick.
