TOWSON, Md. – Coppin State's softball team battled to the end but fell in both games at Towson on Sunday afternoon at Tiger Softball Stadium. The Eagles fell in the opener, 3-2, and forced an additional inning in the nightcap, a 13-5 defeat.
In game one,
Sydney Dombrowski put Coppin on top, 2-0, with a two-run double in the top of the first to score
Brissa Alvarado and
Haley Bravo who reached on an error and a walk.
Towson got one of those runs back in its half of the frame as freshman starting pitcher
Vanessa Carrizosa froze a Tiger batter to end the inning with the bases loaded.
Despite leaving six runners stranded over the next few innings, Coppin remained on top until the bottom of the sixth when Towson scored a pair of runs off
Kayleigh Reome, who had recorded a pair of outs to end the fifth. The Eagles went down in order in the seventh.
Dombrowski went 2-for-3 in the opener while Bravo,
Soraya Valdez-Frick,
Desiree Carrizosa and
Shawnee Ronyak added hits. Bravo also drew a walk to reach safely twice in game one.
Vanessa Carrizosa allowed just one run on five hits while striking out two in 4.1 innings of work but did not factor into the decision.
Towson started out fast in game two, recording ten runs in the first three innings off
Maren Bernal, Reome and Ronyak.
The Eagles kept fighting in the middle innings and scored twice in the fourth on RBI singles by
Nia Bowe and
Desiree Carrizosa to make it a 10-2 score.
Vanessa Carrizosa entered the circle for the Eagles to get the final out of the third and proceeded to fire 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth innings.
A bases-clearing single by
Cindy Sanchez in the fifth scored
Isabella Zalba,
Melanie Aguilera and
Vanessa Carrizosa to make it a 10-5 score, and forced a sixth inning. Zalba reached on a single while Aguilera replaced Dombrowski as a pinch runner. Carrizosa also drew a walk earlier in the frame.
Bowe followed Sanchez' single with a single of her own, but after a walk was issued to
Desiree Carrizosa, Towson got the final out with the bases loaded.
The Tigers were finally able to get to
Vanessa Carrizosa in the sixth and scored three runs on four hits to end the game.
Alvarado,
Alexis Genovese and Bowe all had two hits in the nightcap with both of Genovese's hits going for extra bases. Both
Vanessa Carrizosa and
Desiree Carrizosa had hits and a walk at the plate while Vanessa scored twice.
Vanessa Carrizosa threw 3.0 innings and gave up three runs on four hits while striking out two.
The Eagles will head to University of Delaware for a 3 pm single game on Wednesday, March 10.
