BALTIMORE – Coppin State's
DeJuan Clayton has been named the
College Sports Madness MEAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by the website on Monday morning. This is not the official MEAC Player of the Week award which is released every Tuesday during the basketball season.
A redshirt senior from Bowie, Md., Clayton averaged 25.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.5 steals in the Eagles' back-to-back victories over Delaware State on Monday and Tuesday last week. In the two wins, Clayton also made 23-of-28 free throws.
Opening conference play on January 4 due to a COVID-related postponement, Clayton went for a career-high 32 points while making a career-high 14-of-15 free throws. Clayton, who had missed the six previous games, also recorded six assists and five rebounds while scoring 26 of the team's 51 points in the second half. This performance garnered him MEAC Player of the Week honors on January 5.
The following night, Clayton put up another 18 points, five rebounds and six assists against the same Hornets team while making 9-of-13 free throws. Clayton also was credited with three steals in the victory.
In five games this season, Clayton is averaging a team-high 18.2 points along with 5.2 rebounds. Clayton has dished out 22 assists and has recorded 12 steals. Despite missing six games, Clayton leads the conference with 36 free throws made which would rank fourth in the MEAC if he qualified in games played.
Clayton and the Eagles return to action on January 16-17 when they travel to archrival Morgan State for back-to-back 2 pm tipoffs.
