Men’s Hoops Out-Manned at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's men's basketball team started off strong but fell at MEAC rival Norfolk State, 80-60 on Monday night at Echols Hall. The Eagles now stand at 8-20 on the season and 4-9 in conference play.

Inside the Numbers
  • Koby Thomas led Coppin State with 15 points while making 8-of-14 free throws along with three steals.
  • Andrew Robinson buried four 3-pointers to finish with 14 points and Dejuan Clayton was also in double figures with 13 points and three assists.
  • Robinson has made 86 3-pointers on the season which is already the sixth-most in CSU single-season history.  His 257 3-point attempts this season is four shy of a school-record held by Keith Carmichael (261 in the 1994-95 season).
  • Brendan Medley-Bacon notched a double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds.
  • Ibn Williams tallied seven points and was second on the Eagles with six rebounds.
  • Norfolk State narrowly outshot Coppin, 38.8% to 36.5% but made 11 3-pointers and 17-of-19 free throws while outrebounding the Eagles, 48-33.
  • Jermaine Bishop scored 24 points with six 3-pointers to lead the Spartans.
  • NSU turned 13 CSU turnovers into 19 points and its bench outscored Coppin's, 20-1.
How it Happened
  • Coppin State raced out to an 8-0 lead with 3-pointers by Ibn Williams and Andrew Robinson followed by a layup by Koby Thomas at the 17:33 mark of the first half.
  • Norfolk State got on the board with a layup with 17:15 left but Coppin continued to pour it on and led by as many as 22-9 with 8:23 remaining after a jumper by Dejuan Clayton.
  • The Spartans then went on a 14-0 run over the next 3:15 to take its first lead of the game at 23-22, which was shortly lived after Thomas tied it up seconds later with a free throw.
  • Jermaine Bishop continued his hot shooting with back-to-back 3-pointers which was answered by CSU jumpers from Clayton and Brendan Medley-Bacon.
  • The hosts closed out the half on a 11-5 run to take a 40-32 lead into the half.
  • NSU opened the second half with eight-straight points before the Eagles answered with a 10-2 run to pull within, 50-42 at the 12:58 mark.
  • The eight-point deficit would be as close as CSU got the rest of the way as Norfolk pulled away with a 11-0 run.
