Men’s Hoops Rallies in Final Minutes to Defeat Delaware State, 98-86

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's men's basketball team outscored Delaware State 29-4 over the final 5:07 to defeat the Hornets, 98-86 in MEAC action on Saturday night at PEC Arena.  The 98 points for the Eagles were a season-high and the most during third-year head coach Juan Dixon's tenure.

Inside the Numbers
  • Coppin outshot Delaware State, 52.6% to 47.2% and narrowly outrebounded the Hornets, 38-35.  CSU made a whopping 20-of-29 (69.0%) from the field in the second half to rally from a 13-point deficit with 5:07 left in regulation.
  • Kamar McKnight returned to the CSU lineup after missing 12 games and scored a season-high 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting with four 3-pointers.  He also pulled down seven rebounds, dished out three assists and tallied three steals.
  • Off the bench, Koby Thomas added 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting while making 9-of-15 from the charity stripe.  He also added five rebounds and a pair of steals.
  • Brendan Medley-Bacon notched a double-double with 16 points, 13 rebounds, five blocks and a team-high four assists. Medley-Bacon now has 56 blocks (unofficially) on the season, the fourth-most in CSU single-season history and the most since Henry Colter had 57 in 2004.
  • Dejuan Clayton recorded 16 points and Andrew Robinson was the fifth Eagles player in double figures with 12 points on four 3-pointers.
  • Robinson has made 90 3-pointers this season which is the fourth-most in CSU single-season history.  His 266 3-point attempts are a new CSU single-season record, surpassing Keith Carmichael's old mark of 261 in the 1994-95 season.
  • This was the most points that the Eagles have scored since December 1, 2014 when they defeated Goldey-Beacom, 103-50.
  • Against Division I opponents, it was the most for CSU since January 31, 2011 in a 110-108 double overtime loss against Norfolk State.
  • The Hornets got 27 points from John Crosby as five DSU players also scored in double figures.
How it Happened
  • Coppin trailed, 44-40 at the half as Delaware State outshop the Eagles, 48.6% to 35.7%.  The Eagles made seven threes and their aggressiveness led to them making 13-of-18 from the stripe during the half to keep them in the game.
  • A 3-pointer by Andrew Robinson sparked a 19-5 run to open the second half with Kamar McKnight going off for ten of the team's points, giving Coppin a 59-49 advantage with 14:03 left to play.
  • The Hornets then made a long run of their own, taking a 68-67 lead with 9:55 on the clock and kept running it up to an 82-69 advantage with a 33-10 run at the 5:07 mark.
  • A layup by Dejuan Clayton just seconds later led to a CSU timeout before Koby Thomas and Clayton hit four-straight free throws to pull to within 82-75.
  • McKnight answered a DSU jumper with a three, followed by another from Robinson to make it a single possession game with 3:33 remaining.
  • A senior from Toronto, Canada, McKnight stepped it off on the defensive end with a steal and went coast-to-coast for a layup before making a go-ahead three with 2:44 left, giving Coppin a 86-84 lead.
  • DSU's John Crosby tied it up at 86-86 at the other end with a layup at the 2:26 mark, but Thomas converted on a three-point play and followed a jumper by Medley-Bacon with a dunk with just over a minute left, sealing the win.
Up Next: Coppin closes out the regular season with a pair of road games, starting with a trip to Morgan State on Saturday, February 29 at 4 pm.
