NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Dejuan Clayton has been named the MEAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. This is the first weekly honor this season for Clayton, and third time that he has been named the MEAC Player of the Week during his career.
A redshirt junior from Bowie, Md., Clayton averaged 17.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.7 steals to lead Coppin to a 1-2 record this past week. Clayton made 15-of-32 (46.9%) of his shots from the floor and 20-of-26 (76.9%) of his free throws during the week.
Clayton scored a season-high 21 points while making a career-high 12-of-14 free throws in the Eagles' upset victory at Loyola Chicago last Tuesday. He also added six rebounds and was credited with a pair of steals in the victory over the Ramblers which was CSU's first win over a non-MEAC Division I opponent in nearly six years.
Clayton also finished with 17 points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals at Northern Illinois before going for 15 points and four rebounds at Northern Kentucky two nights later.
For the season, Clayton is averaging 14.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.6 steals while ranking second in NCAA Division I with 28 free throws made and fifth with 34 free throws attempts. Clayton is just 18 points shy of becoming the 23
rd Eagles player to record 1,000 career points.
