Volleyball Gets Final Tune-Up at UMBC Before MEAC Play

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Coppin State University volleyball team will be on the road tonight, facing the UMBC Retrievers before the conference matches begin on Friday. This will be the first time the Eagles have faced the Retrievers since moving into its shiny new arena, which opened in February. Match starts at 7 p.m.

What You Need to Know Coppin Contributors
  • Freshman Brianna Lang is coming off a historic weekend, as she broke the program record for most assists in a game with 64, passing Chelsee Sauni who accomplished the feat in 2014. The setter's performance is also tied for the third-best mark of the season in the NCAA.
  • Lang is also averaging 8.41 assists per game, the third best average in the MEAC.
  • Miajavon Coleman joined Lang in the Coppin State record books, as she blasted 29 kills in the same match, good for third all-time behind Indira Laurencin (32) and Cindy Okpegbue (30).
  • Coppin as a team has the fifth best hitting percentage in the conference (.145), which is led by Coleman (.246) who is currently fifth as well.
  • Libero Chelsie Kolibar has been a threat on both sides of the net as she leads the Lady Eagles in service aces (13) and digs (153).
  • Junior Middle Hitter Christa Johnson is pacing CSU with 40 blocks on the year, Jordan Celestine is in second with 30.
Scouting the Retrievers
  • Maryland-Baltimore County has struggled of late, losing its previous 5 matchups and 9 of 11.
  • Retriever blockers have been strong through 14 games, denying 1.93 shots per game and 110 blocks overall, which is second and first in the America East Conference respectively.
  • The Eagles will need to know where Carmen Freeman is on the court as she is in the Top 25 for attack attempts (625) and leads the conference in attacks per set (10.96).
  • America East Conference First Teamer Paola Rojas will look to continue her productive start, as she places second for blocks per set (1.04) along with placing first in the America East in total blocks (59).
  • UMBC Setter Krytsia Negrόn has lent a helping hand for her fellow Retrievers as she is currently fourth on the conference leaderboard in assists per set (9.46) as well as second in total assists (532).
