Bethlehem, PA - Coppin State Volleyball (0-1) fell to Radford University (1-0) today 3-0 at the Crosstown Invitational Tournament hosted by Lehigh University. The set scores were 13-25, 18-25, 13-25. Coppin was led by
Asia Stennis who had six points, three kills, one service ace and two blocks. Also on the offensive were Marlena Guice, Valiyah Barnes, and
Dominique Madarang scoring 3 points each. Madarang picked up where she left off from last season and led the team with seven assists.
In the first set, Coppin fell behind early as Radford started up 2-0 behind the kill of Sydney Tekstra. Stennis, would get the Lady Eagles on the board with a kill of her own from
Angel Jamerson. Coppin again came within one point from Radford after benefiting from an attack error by Radford bringing the contest to a 4-3 score. From that point, Radford would go on a 21-10 point run to end the first set.
Coppin fared better in the second set as Madarang and
Christa Johnson both got a kill to first even the score and then pull back within one, leaving the score at 4-3 in the early minutes of the set. Radford then went on a 7 to 1 scoring run before the Lady Eagles would score 3 straight closing the score at 11-7. Coppin would later come within 3 points from Radford after benefitting from a couple Radford errors and a kill by
Valiyah Barnes, pitting the score at 17-14. Coppin never got closer than a three point deficit as they pulled in two more times with the score 19-16 and 21-18. Radford would finish off the set with a kill and a couple aces to secure the set win.
In the third set, Coppin grabbed its first lead of the afternoon
Marlena Guice (kill),
Asia Stennis (block) and a Radford error put Coppin up 3-2. Radford was able to go on a 6-2 scoring run before Coppin would battle back by scoring three straight and knotting the match at 8-8. Unfortunately, Radford would secure the match after going on a 17-5 scoring run to secure the win and Coppin's first loss.
The Lady Eagles return to action tomorrow as they play Marist College at 1pm and Lehigh at 8pm. Both matches will be available on
