Volleyball Extends Winning Streak to Six With Victories Over Rhode Island & Merrimack

STORRS, Conn. – The Coppin State women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches on Saturday, earning a pair of victories at UConn's White & Blue Tournament at the UConn Volleyball Center. The Eagles opened the day with a 3-1 victory over Rhode Island before sweeping Merrimack, 3-0 to improve to 7-5 overall on the season.
 
CSU has gone a perfect 3-0 in back-to-back weekend classics with additional wins over UConn, Akron, Cleveland State and Valparaiso.
 
Coppin State 3, Rhode Island 1
Coppin State overcame a competitive second set to defeat Rhode Island, 25-10, 25-27, 25-19, 25-23.
 
The Eagles dominated at the net, finishing with a .250 hitting percentage compared to .123 for the Rams. Coppin State also held advantages in kills (52-44), aces (8-6), blocks (16-9), assists (48-38) and digs (60-53).
 
Kayden Cupid and Ivanna Luna led the Eagles with 11 kills apiece, while Deviana Walker added eight. Cupid also recorded a team-high seven blocks, while Kendall Minta added six blocks and Eva Rovello contributed five.
 
Coco Figueroa anchored the defensive effort with a match-high 24 digs and added four service aces. Rovello finished with 46 assists and eight digs, while Karina Diaz chipped in seven digs and matched Rovello with two aces.
 
Coppin State 3, Merrimack 0
The Eagles closed the day with a dominant 25-20, 28-26, 25-11 sweep of Merrimack.
Coppin State finished the match with a .313 hitting percentage, including a blistering .471 mark in the third set while holding the Warriors to -.080. The Eagles held advantages in kills (49-35), aces (3-1), blocks (6-4), assists (41-30) and digs (47-42).
 
Cherisse Atilano paced the Eagles offensively with a match-high 15 kills to reach the 500 mark in her career while hitting .281. Ivanna Luna added 10 kills and Pamela De Jesus Tejedor contributed eight kills while hitting .538 on 13 swings. Eva Rovello registered 37 assists and hit .500 with six kills.
 
Coco Figueroa led the defensive effort with 10 digs, while Atilano added nine and Karina Diaz finished with eight. Kayden Cupid led the Eagles with three blocks, while Rori Gray and Rovello each added two.
 
Up Next: Coppin will head back to Baltimore while making a pit stop to play at New Haven at 3 pm on Sunday, September 20.
