DOVER, Del. – Coppin State baseball dropped a pair of conference games at Delaware State University on Saturday, May 6
th at Soldier Field. The Eagles lost game one 8-4 and game two 12-8.
Coppin State falls to 7-15 in the conference and 10-30 overall. Delaware State improves to 19-21 overall and 14-9 in the MEAC.
In game one, Delaware State led 7-0 through the first six inning until the Eagles finally got on board with their first two runs in the seventh inning. Freshman
Corey Treyes led off with a double to left center and then scored on an RBI double to left center by freshman
Allen Saar. Senior
Clinton Arnold followed with an RBI double to right center scoring Saar for the second run of the inning. Sophomore
Nazier McIlwain doubled through the left side and junior
Brett Helmbrecht drew a walk.
The Hornets scored one run in the eighth and the Eagles responded with two runs on one hit and an error by DSU. Saar and Arnold drew walks and then McIlwain reached on an error loading the bases. Helmbrecht was up and blasted a two-RBI single up the middle scoring both Saar and Arnold. The Hornets defense rebounded and held onto their advantage downing Coppin State in game one, 8-4.
Sophomore
Krystian Negron (1-4) went 5.0 innings striking out five batters. Freshman
Joshua Hancock tossed 3.0 innings striking out three.
Nazier McIlwain and
Brett Helmbrecht both had two hits each. McIlwain doubled twice for the first time in his career while Helmbrecht tied a season-high with two RBIs totaling 17 this year. Coppin State recorded a season-best five RBI with
Allen Saar,
Clinton Arnold and Treyes joining McIlwain with one each.
In game two, the Eagles led 4-1 by the third inning but the Hornets exploded for nine run on seven hits in the third inning.
Sophomore
Jamar Criss knocked in a two-RBI double to right field scoring McIlwain and Saar in the first inning. Treyes singled to second base in the second inning and then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error.
The third inning was an up and down one for CSU with two runs on three hits. McIlwain RBI singled to right field scoring Saar and then Helmbrecht singled to get on base. Cross was next and continued the Eagles rally with an RBI single through the right scoring McIlwain.
Trailing by eight runs heading into the seventh inning Coppin State managed four runs. Criss and Treyes brought in runs with singles to the outfield and freshman
Isaiah Wilson singled up the middle. Saar, Criss, McIlwain and Santana all scored runs but the comeback fell short 12-8.
Starting pitcher
Jahmon Taylor (1-5) went 2.0 innings and freshman pitcher
Quinn Gleed went 4.0 innings in relief.
Corey Treyes had a season-best three hits including his fourth double of the season totaling four bases with two RBI.
Jamar Criss went 4-for-4 also with four RBI and a run scored.
Brett Helmbrecht finished with two hits while both
Allen Saar and
Nazier McIlwain both scored three runs.
Coppin State will play the third and final game of the series on Sunday, May 7
th at noon from Soldier Field.
