Justin Ritz Dominates Delaware State in Complete Game Victory

HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's Justin Ritz took advantage of a rare start on the mound and picked up a complete game victory as the Eagles defeated Delaware State, 8-3, in their NEC series opener on Thursday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.  With the win, Coppin moved to 11-35 overall and 11-20 in the NEC while the Hornets fell to 6-41 on the year and 6-25 in league play.

A senior from Portsmouth, Va., Ritz, who is second in the NEC with five saves this year, allowed just three runs on five hits while striking out five in just his second career start. Ritz threw 105 pitches in his 66th appearance in a CSU uniform, just one shy of Brian Pisani ('97) school record, and retired the final 12 batters he faced.

Ritz' complete game was the first by an Eagles pitcher since Kaden Straily went the distance in a two-hit shutout of Norfolk State on April 13, 2025.

Marcus Sanders led the Eagles offense, going 2-for-2 with a home run, four RBI and a walk while Armando (AJ) Hurtado and Pedro Agosto also had two hits each and combined for three doubles. Nelson Grajales drove in a pair of runs and Terrell Milliner scored three times.

After two scoreless innings, Delaware State struck first with a run in the third, but Coppin responded with five runs in its half of the fourth. Hurtado and Angel Garcia started the inning with back-to-back singles before Agosto doubled to right, driving in Hurtado to tie the score. Grajales followed with a two-run single to center, and after Milliner was plunked, Sanders singled down the right field line, driving in two and extending the lead to 5-1.

The Hornets cut the margin to 5-3 with runs in both the fifth and sixth before the Eagles got both runs back as Sanders launched a two-run shot over the left field fence in the sixth. Jordan Treadwell added another run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth, scoring Milliner from third after he led off the frame with a walk.

Coppin and Delaware State resume their three-game series on Friday, May 15 at 1:00 pm at Joe Cannon Stadium, followed by a 1 pm first pitch on Saturday where the Eagles will recognize its seniors, including Ritz, in a pregame ceremony.
