Box Score BETHESDA - Coppin State finished with seven hits while holding Georgetown to only three hits in a 4-3 loss at Shirley Povich Field.
The Eagles gave up two costly runs in the second inning but battled back scoring in the final two innings trimming the deficit. Freshman infielder Nazier McIlwain had a team-high two hits including a double base hit for Coppin State and also led defensively with seven put outs. Junior infielder
Bryant Miranda had a hit and an RBI and freshman catcher
Malik White scored a run, with a hit and an RBI in the non-conference battle. Starting pitcher for the Eagles,
Devin Rivera Ozuna went five innings, striking out two batters, and allowed only two hits.
Georgetown took a 2-0 lead on bases loaded walks in the second inning of play. In the next inning, Coppin State capitalized off of a defensive error by the Hoyas allowing White to score on a failed pickoff attempt (2-1).
The Hoyas extended their advantage to 4-1 with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. CSU got off to a late start with runs in the eighth and ninth innings attempting a come from behind victory on the road. In the eighth, CSU had two hits that led to a run by freshman center fielder
Andrew O'Dwyer. O'Dwyer singled to right field and then advanced to third base on a double down the left field line by McIlwain. Miranda grounded out on the next play sending O'Dwyer home (4-2).
In the ninth inning, the Eagles rallied with three hits setting up an exciting closing. Freshman designated hitter
John O'Dwyer singled to center field, then freshman infielder
Erik Crossman singled through the right side putting another runner on base. Both runners advanced on a groundout for the second out of the inning. Next at the plate, White singled for an RBI to right field scoring O'Dwyer, but a runner was thrown out at third base ending the game at 4-3.
Coppin State will host Norfolk State University in their final MEAC weekend series of the regular season beginning with a double header on Saturday, May 7
th at 1 p.m. from Joe Cannon Field.
